Korea where Embryonic Stem Cell (ESC) research is encouraged, and believed to be the world’s most ideal place to conduct its research, has affected not only the biotechnology industry but to the world after the scandal of fabricating ESC which was revealed in the end of 2005. This gave an adverse factor to the Korean scientific industry, however, for better or worse, the news eventually educated the nation to understand the purpose of stem cell research. Moreover, the government also took this opportunity to recognize the importance of ESC and intends to support the research further. The industry also became alert to distinguish competent ESC research companies after the event.
  Korean government is actively investing to expand life science industry and related projects as well. KOREA Bio-Venture ASSOCIATION (KOBIOVEN) was established and 24 bio-clusters were formed. The Korean biotech industry’s market size is about 1/10 of that in Japan, however the number of biotech companies are more than double. Quality of technology varies from companies to companies, however companies with prominent high valued technology are emerging .
