The Japanese government has been working to expand
the life science industry as well as to establish public R&D
management organization in an effort for the country to be able
to keep its high technology expertee recognition, and maintain clear
global presence in the fast evolving life science field.
Bio-clusters are being formed especially in Kanto (Tokyo
area), also in Hokkaido and Kansai (Osaka area). Moreover, university
ventures have started to emerge, such as AnGes MG.
Large Japanese pharmaceutical industries are beginning
to merge such as Daiichi and Sankyo becoming Daiichi-Sankyo, Fujisawa
and Yamanouchi becoming Astellas, and other companies are actively
starting partnerships with foreign biotech companies. The factors
contributing to these changes are the expanding R&D costs and
the ever increasing challenge to compete with foreign pharmaceutical
companies.
Although the number of biotech venture companies have
increased following the global trend, which ended in 2003, most
companies are still in the R&D phase and have not reached to
the point to generate revenue. In addition to this situation, the
Tokyo Stock Exchange Mother’s board has tightened the restriction
for companies to be listed, contributing in slowing down the number
of new IPOs.
Some time may be required for Japanese biotechnology
to be industrialized by launching products in the market or partnering
with foreign companies. However, other health care services within
the life science area is growing, such as food for specified health
use (FOSHU).
PGx is in its early phase in Japan. MediBIC has established
total solution for PGx earlier than any other Japanese companies.
With the growing awareness of PGx and rising costs as well as utilizing
state-of-the-art technologies for R&D, MediBIC consults and
provides the efficient way to support the R&D needs for our
clients together with our global network.
